Currently, the three companies are engaged in a feasibility study for the project and are exploring options for building and operating a versatile LNG terminal in Northern Germany, offering import and small-scale services.

The potential location under consideration is Brunsbüttel, situated along the Elbe River in close proximity to the city of Hamburg.

The feasibility study encompasses various assessments, including economic, technical, nautical, and regulatory evaluations, as well as permit procedures.

Acknowledging the EC approval as a significant milestone for the project, the three companies stated in a joint announcement that they will proceed with the subsequent development phases. However, they have clarified that no financial investment decisions have been made thus far.

Construction of the second liquefaction train at the Chevron-led Wheatstone LNG project in Western Australia has surpassed 90 percent completion, according to Woodside, a partner in the project.

Key priorities for the second train include final mechanical fit-out and pre-commissioning of instrumentation and controls for refrigeration compressors.

The first cargo from the second Wheatstone LNG train is anticipated to be shipped out in the second quarter of 2018, while domestic gas production is scheduled to commence in the latter half of the year.

The project’s inaugural cargo was shipped in October and delivered to Japan’s JERA on November 12. In December, a shutdown was conducted to clean and replace strainers in LNG Train 1, with operations resuming on December 27.

Upon reaching full capacity, the project’s two-train LNG facility is projected to contribute approximately six percent of the Asia Pacific region’s future LNG production. It is slated to deliver 8.9 million metric tons per annum (MTPA) of LNG for export to customers in Asia.

Wheatstone LNG is a joint venture comprising Chevron (64.14 percent), Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (13.4 percent), Woodside (13 percent), and Kyushu Electric Power Company (1.46 percent), along with PE Wheatstone, jointly owned by JERA (8 percent).

Volvo Trucks North America is set to introduce its own 13-liter liquefied natural gas (LNG) engine for the North American market in 2014, as part of the company’s commitment to providing sustainable transportation solutions.

The new engine, featuring advanced high-pressure diesel ignition technology, promises significant fuel efficiency improvements compared to current natural gas products. Alongside Volvo’s existing compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered VNM and VNL model daycabs, this addition will offer customers a comprehensive range of natural gas-powered options. Volvo is also exploring the potential of dimethyl ether (DME), another fuel derived from natural gas, as an alternative for the North American market.

Ron Huibers, President of Volvo Trucks North American Sales & Marketing, acknowledges the ongoing infrastructure challenges surrounding natural gas adoption but sees a promising future for the segment. Volvo’s LNG engine aims to address these challenges by offering increased range and improved fuel efficiency, aligning with the company’s commitment to technological innovation and sustainability.

The new LNG engine utilizes advanced high-pressure diesel ignition technology, igniting natural gas with trace amounts of diesel to deliver a 30% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to spark-ignition engines. This makes it suitable for demanding long-haul applications while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 20% compared to diesel products, without compromising power, torque, or fuel efficiency.

Volvo’s vertically integrated approach, combined with the proven performance of its proprietary Volvo I-Shift automated mechanical transmission, ensures seamless integration and optimized performance. Additionally, Volvo’s existing CNG-powered VNM daycab, equipped with a factory-installed Cummins ISL G engine, offers a solution for localized or closed-loop applications, meeting current demand while minimizing emissions and aftertreatment requirements.

Moreover, Volvo is exploring DME as a promising alternative fuel, conducting extensive customer field testing in Europe. DME shows potential as a heavy-truck fuel, offering performance comparable to diesel while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Its handling characteristics, environmental impact, and safety features make it a compelling option for future transportation needs.

Italian oil and gas contractor Saipem was tasked with executing the construction of the 890 km gas export offshore pipeline for the Ichthys LNG project, led by Inpex, in Australia back in 2012.

The project involved laying a 42-inch diameter pipeline, which was noted to be the longest subsea pipeline in the southern hemisphere and the third longest globally. Saipem utilized its vessels, the Semac 1 and Castorone, for the shallow water and deepwater sections of the pipeline, respectively, and successfully completed the pipelaying process in November 2015.

In November of the following year, Inpex announced the successful welding of the offshore section with the onshore section, marking the readiness of the pipeline to transport gas from the offshore Ichthys field to the onshore facilities located at Bladin Point near Darwin for further processing.

With an estimated cost of US$34 billion, the Ichthys project is slated to commence production by the third quarter of 2017, according to the latest official update from Inpex. Once operational, Ichthys is projected to have an annual LNG production capacity of 8.9 million tons per annum.

The Ichthys project is a collaborative effort involving Inpex, major partner Total, Taiwan’s CPC Corporation, and the Australian subsidiaries of Tokyo Gas, Osaka Gas, Kansai Electric, Chubu Electric Power, and Toho Gas.

STX Finland Oy and Viking Line ABP have inked a preliminary agreement to construct an environmentally conscious, next-generation cruise ferry for Viking Line, with an option for a sister ship included in the deal. Valued at around 240 million euros, the vessel will be crafted at the Turku shipyard and is slated for delivery in early 2013.

This new cruise ferry aspires to be the most eco-friendly large passenger vessel ever constructed. He emphasized the commitment to ensuring a delightful passenger experience, with an estimated 2,600 person-years of employment created by the project, a boon for both the Turku shipyard and the broader Finnish shipbuilding industry.

Heikinheimo highlighted the importance of maintaining an active shipyard, citing its enhanced competitiveness in securing future cruise ship projects. The design phase is set to commence promptly at the Turku shipyard, followed by the commencement of construction in autumn 2011, with a focus on enhancing production efficiency and productivity through streamlined operations.

The cruise ferry, measuring approximately 210 meters in length with a gross tonnage of 57,000, will accommodate 2,800 passengers and boast a top speed of nearly 23 knots. Operated by a crew of 200, the vessel will feature 870 passenger cabins, ample space for trucks and passenger cars, and hoistable car decks. Operating between Turku and Stockholm, the cruise ferry aims to provide premium passenger experiences on this popular route.

Shell’s monumental Prelude FLNG facility is poised to commence chilled gas production offshore Western Australia in 2017, according to Peter Styles, the Deputy Chief Minister of the Northern Territory.

Styles shared this update during the LNG18 conference in Perth, expressing that while the Prelude FLNG was initially anticipated to begin production this year, the timeline has shifted to 2017.

Shell, headquartered in The Hague and renowned as a global LNG leader, has been relatively opaque regarding the production commencement timeline for the immense floating facility stationed at the Prelude gas field off Australia’s coast.

A Shell spokesperson declined to provide specific details on the Prelude FLNG project’s anticipated schedule to LNG World News. However, they referred to a statement by Shell CEO Ben van Beurden, delivered during a media round table at the LNG18 conference.

Van Beurden noted, “We expect real material cash from Prelude in 2018,” emphasizing the project’s strategic importance. He reiterated Shell’s commitment to prioritize the successful deployment and operation of the Prelude FLNG.

The Prelude FLNG, under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries’ Geoje shipyard in South Korea, is unparalleled in scale, boasting dimensions of 488 meters in length and 74 meters in width.

Anticipated to remain moored at the Prelude gas field for 25 years, the FLNG facility is projected to produce 3.6 million metric tons per annum (mtpa) of LNG, 1.3 mtpa of condensate, and 0.4 mtpa of LPG for export.

Despite its monumental scale, the Prelude FLNG may not secure the title of the world’s first operational floating LNG facility. Petronas’ PFLNG SATU is expected to achieve this milestone in the coming months, followed by Exmar’s Caribbean FLNG.

While the FLNG industry faces challenges, including Woodside’s Browse FLNG project and Inpex-operated Abadi FLNG encountering setbacks, the industry’s pioneering efforts signify a significant milestone in the evolution of LNG production methodologies.

Noble Energy, headquartered in Houston, has confirmed that construction progress on its Keota LNG facility in Colorado is proceeding as planned.

According to Noble’s third-quarter report, the start-up of the LNG facility, situated in rural northern Weld County, is expected in the first quarter of 2015.

The LNG facility is designed with the capacity to produce up to 100,000 gallons of LNG daily. Noble Energy intends to utilize the facility’s production to power the company’s rigs and heavy equipment employed in its DJ Basin operations.

In addition to the update on the LNG facility, Noble reported a significant increase in net income, which more than doubled to $419 million in the third quarter compared to $205 million in the corresponding period of 2013.

Furthermore, total sales volumes for the quarter reached a record average of 302 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day, representing a three percent increase compared to the third quarter of 2013.
